BlackFlare is developing modular AI and high-performance computing infrastructure for locations where conventional data-center development is constrained by power availability, grid interconnection timelines, geography, or water.
Why we exist
AI electricity demand is growing faster than transmission and utility capacity can always be planned and built. At the same time, energy exists in places the grid does not reach well: field gas, associated gas, stranded gas, and flare gas with poor gathering economics. BlackFlare asks a different question than where the grid has capacity. Where does energy already exist that can support the compute directly?
What we are building
A modular platform in which four layers are designed to operate as one system: onsite energy generation, high-performance compute, thermal infrastructure, and supervisory controls. Local energy resource, onsite generation, electrical infrastructure, modular AI and HPC compute, and remote monitoring, coordinated rather than bolted together.
Modular and relocatable
Repeatable equipment blocks that can be deployed with conventional heavy equipment, expanded incrementally, serviced in the field, and relocated when a fuel source, site, or mission changes. Relocatable means disconnected, transported, installed, and recommissioned, not a data center operating in transit.
Power-aware by design
A data center does not have to behave as a passive electrical load. Because software can know a workload is about to start before the electrical load appears, generation, cooling, and fast-response storage can prepare ahead of it. BlackFlare is developing the supervisory architecture that makes this coordination possible, while safety-critical protections remain independent and deterministic.
Founder
Thomas McLaughlin is the Founder and CEO of BlackFlare, Inc. His background is in heavy equipment, diesel and industrial power systems, CAN bus and machine controls, field service, and equipment retrofits. That matters here: the sites this infrastructure is built for look more like energy and industrial operations than urban data halls.
Where we are today
BlackFlare is in technology development, engineering, partner development, site development, and proof-of-concept planning. The platform is designed to remain flexible across generator manufacturers, data-center vendors, accelerator architectures, cooling technologies, and fuel sources as each of those evolves.
Public engagement
BlackFlare submitted written testimony in 2025 to the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Energy, and responded in 2025 to the U.S. Department of Energy Grid Deployment Office on accelerating speed-to-power for large new electricity demand.
